well, i’ve been busy at work practically since i got back from christmas break, so i haven’t had much of a chance to play around with my new camera since christmas. when i played with it over christmas, i noticed a pixel in the lcd was stuck when i was taking pictures…and then i noticed the same one was also stuck in the evf (electronic viewfinder). however, when i viewed pictures on the lcd, i didn’t see any bad pixels or anything, so i kind of forgot about it.
well, i finally got the chance to play with it today and downloaded the pictures i took onto my computer. the bad pixel is there and it’s actually more of a clump of pixels than a single one. :(
i know that bad pixels (or “hot” pixels) due to manufacturing defects in the ccd are pretty common in higher megapixel cameras and can be corrected in software pretty easily, but i’m anal about that stuff, so i called up canon and am getting it fixed. i just have to ship it in and they’ll fix it in about a week or two. i really like canon’s service…i had to deal with them once before with my a40, when it got the (now i find out) notorious “E18 error” and they were really great about it…my camera was technically out of the warranty period and they fixed it within a week for no charge.
reading online, it looks like they can actually “fix” it without replacing the ccd, but by marking those pixels as bad in a pixel map and avoiding the data on the camera itself, so i guess we’ll see how they fix it.
for those who care, here is the bad pixel close-up, and the full-image if you click on it. (also, that’s my living room in the dark)
